Basking Ridge, N.J.
– Ravi Sethi, president of Avaya Labs, was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award (DAA) of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK). This is the highest award given by the Institute to its alumni.
The IITK is one of the premier institutions established by the Government of India and was created to provide meaningful education, conduct original research and provide leadership in technological innovation for India’s industrial growth. Previous recipients of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT Kanpur include Narayana Murthy, one of the founders of Infosys and Pradeep Sindhu, the founder of Juniper Networks.
Sethi, who was cited for his outstanding technological and managerial contributions, is in charge of research and development at Avaya Inc., a leading global provider of business communications applications, systems and services. He oversees a group of communications experts whose areas of expertise include unified communications, collaborative applications, multimedia technologies, IP communications, networked systems, data analysis and software technologies.
The award was presented during the Annual Alumni Convention of the Alumni Association of IITK, which was held on the Kanpur campus on February 24.
Sethi, who has a Ph.D. from Princeton University in electrical engineering, specializing in computer science, was formerly senior vice president for communications research at Bell Laboratories. While at Bell Labs, he also was senior vice president for computing and mathematical sciences research and vice president of product innovation for Lucent Technologies’ communications software group. For his technical contributions to programming languages and compilers, Sethi was named a Fellow by the Association for Computing Machinery. Earlier in his career, he received the Distinguished Technical Staff Award from Bell Labs. He has authored four books and has written articles for numerous publications. He is best known as one of authors of the classic computer science textbook, “Compilers: Principles, Techniques and Tools” popularly known as the Dragon Book.
“We are pleased to present our highest honors to Dr. Sethi, who began his career as a first-year student at IIT Kanpur and as one of the first teaching assistants for computing courses taught throughout India,” said Professor Sanjay G. Dhande, director, IIT Kanpur. “Clearly, Dr. Sethi received an excellent grounding in the field of computer software science, and his distinguished achievements also bring honor to the Institute, where his professional journey began.”
